ABOUT HOW TO DESIGN :
I did all this with Photoshop, I created a gallery of free publicly licensed images which I get the elements I need from those but I never use them raw, any creature or object you see have been combined from many modified items, for example in the case of this child, the head, coat, wear, pants and shoes and even the palm of the hand, each related to a separate image.
I usually try change all the components and also the color or textures because I like what I create to be unique.
The same is true of this lizard, and I transform it from a simple lizard by combining dozens of images into what I imagine it to be.
Then I create the animation section with the features of the gif section in Photoshop.
