Villanelle

This is Villanelle.

She is about go to court, alone. Crime seems to be a generational issue in her family. She grew up mostly cared for by her mother, as her father was always in and out of prison. But despite his repeated offending, he would always be welcomed back into the family with open arms, as if he had never left.

This time, it’s her turn to go to court. She knows it is wrong, but she having a child to provide for has driven her to repeated thieving. Unlike how her father was supported and forgiven, however, she has been shunned and stigmatised by her spouse and family. So today, she walks alone up to the courthouse. If she is sentenced, which, being a woman, is likely, she dreads her return to an unsupportive, rejecting family that will forever view her as criminal and nothing else.
